Cataract SurgeryFrequently Asked QuestionsWill I still need to wear glasses after cataract surgery?
You should expect to wear glasses after cataract and refractive lens extraction. With recent advances such as the Crystalens accommodating IOL you may be able to see near, far and at all distances in between without glasses. Using standard IOLs, monovision may permit reduced dependence on reading glasses. Will a laser be used? No. Cataract and lens extraction procedures use ultrasonic waves (phacoemulsification) to break up and remove cataract and lens material thru a small incision. The basic technique for cataract and lens surgery has been used for over 20 years. Do cataracts come back? No. However, sometimes the membrane that holds the lens in place becomes cloudy in the months following cataract surgery. If that happens, a YAG laser will be used to create a clear opening in the membrane. This is a quick, in-office procedure. How are cataracts removed?A small incision will be made on the side of your cornea, the clear surface that covers the front of your eye. Dr. Cutarelli will then insert a tiny probe. This device emits ultrasound waves that soften and break up the lens so that it can be removed by suction. After the natural lens has been removed, it will be replaced by an artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). An IOL is a clear, plastic lens that requires no care and becomes a permanent part of your eye. Light is focused clearly by the IOL onto the retina, improving your vision. You will not feel or see the new lens. Will it hurt? Before your procedure, you will be given a topical anesthetic (eye drops) to numb your eye, so the procedure will not hurt. Most patients feel nothing or only gentle pressure during the procedure. Is cataract surgery covered by insurance?Yes. Check with your carrier and your doctor for details. Is refractive lens extraction covered by insurance?Usually not. Will I be able to drive home after my surgery? We recommend that you have someone else drive you home following your surgery. How soon will I be able to resume my normal activities after cataract surgery? Most patients resume their normal activities 24 to 48 hours after surgery. With modern refractive cataract surgery, there are no-stitches and a patch is optional. Patients recover their vision much more quickly than with older techniques. Is cataract surgery safe?Cataract surgery is a very common procedure, perhaps the most commonly performed in the United States. Cataract and refractive lens extraction procedures have an excellent success rate. As with any surgery, there are possible risks, such as infection, loss of vision, double vision, and retinal detachment. Can I have LASIK after cataract or refractive lens surgery to fine tune my vision? In most cases LASIK is not necessary. When desired, LASIK can be performed for "fine tuning" of your vision.
