Intacs Prescription Inserts

intacs keratoconus colorado Intacs corneal implants is an FDA approved option for the keratoconus patient that is essentially an option in-between contact lenses and a corneal transplant. Intacs prescription inserts provide clear maintenance-free vision for individuals who are mildly nearsighted or for patients with keratoconus, where contact lenses and glasses are no longer suitable.

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease, which causes a thinning of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. As keratoconus progresses, the quality of one's vision deteriorates and contact lenses or glasses no longer become a satisfactory solution for most people. This disorder is the most common corneal dystrophy in the United States, affecting one in every 2,000 or 136,000 people across all races. It typically begins during teen years and progresses at varying rates until stabilizing by age 40.

Keratoconus manifests when the central and inferior areas of the cornea thin and gradually bulge outward, forming a cone-like shape. This abnormal curvature changes the cornea's refractive properties causing varying degrees of blurred vision and distortion of objects. Occasional tissue swelling may occur which can, in time, lead to sight-impairing cornea scarring.

Historically, a corneal transplant has been the only option – until Intacs. Intacs corneal implants may be the best possible option to stabilize the cornea, improve vision and potentially defer the need for a corneal transplant.

Intacs corneal implants are indicated for use in the correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism associated with keratoconus where contact lenses and glasses are no longer suitable. Intacs corneal implants are approved by the FDA for keratoconus under a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE).

Intacs inserts are clear, thin prescription inserts that gently reshape the curvature of the cornea so that light rays focus properly on the retina. The procedure for Intacs does not permanently cut or remove tissue from the central cornea and is reversible. Intacs inserts cannot be felt, are no more visible than a contact lens and require no maintenance. With Intacs, many people actually see better than 20/20.

Intacs inserts are FDA approved and are supported by more than ten years of clinical studies. They can be removed or replaced if your vision changes.
